Nymph

Once upon a time, a few centuries years ago, an article about the dryads was written in my blog. The logical complement to the writing became more after them, and about the nymphs in general, as very similar magical creatures. After dryads – a nymph who love trees. Then I did not do it and now it’s time to fix this terrible assumption. So who are those – a nymph? In the mythology of the ancient Greeks so called impersonation of natural forces in the form of girls. Moreover, under the elemental forces, in this case it should be understood not simply controlled air, fire, water, and tree growth, the flow of water and many other things. If we look at them from a slightly different point of view, the nymphs can be classified as tree spirits, creeks, flowers, golf and many other objects that are inaccessible for the understanding of the ancient man. Literally, the name of the “nymph” can be translated as “the bride”. On seeing these beautiful creatures are often blinded, and then died. But not all. With some of the people they come into contact, communicating with them or even surrendering the great heroes and beautiful young men. Modern researchers have been able to establish the names of more than five hundred of these magical creatures!

According to the legends of ancient Greece, the very first nymph (meliady) emerged from the drops of blood that flowed from the castrated Uranus. Their blood has spawned Gaia (mother earth in Greek mythology). Gradually there were other nymphs. For Oceanides – a daughter of Tethys and Ocean. Nereid called daughters of Nereus and Doris. Very often, their names indicate their certain qualities or characteristics. Also, many nymphs “creates” the gods of Olympus, or simply powerful spirits. Accordingly, where they literally have to live. Thus, they can be found and in the meadows and in the caves (can not remember the nymph Echo), and streams, and in the trees, and colored meadows, and groves, and woods. The Greeks believed that the sources that come from the earth, serve as a haven for nymphs, companions of the god-healer Asclepius. They can heal, heal and give health in the use of water from these sources. We now know that many sources of healing due to the content of certain chemical combinations, and the Greeks tried to explain this feature mythological way.

Also, many nymphs and acted as judges. It was fairly common practice when tribeswoman or tribesmen, and even citizens that suspected violations of certain laws on the court gave these creatures. Do this as follows: – written on the label name of the person throwing it into the whirlpool and take a look – if it goes into the water, will float down the river or it will be thrown out to the shore. And it was believed that the nymphs can render an unfair decision in those cases where there was no manifest due respect to them. One of the most terrible punishment was considered “sent down” madness. But in the speeches of the many human and at the same time we are trying to find meaning, which, they believed, nymphs they want to convey. Because of this, there was and is firmly established idea that the mad – it supports knowledge that are hidden from other people. A lot of this has contributed to the emergence of prophets and prophetesses. In the future, this public “institution” has found expression in the foolishness. Returning to the theme of nymphs – their ability to prophesy the future, you can consider the example of the Delphic oracle. So, initially the site was the oracle of Gaia, then Daphne (one of the most famous and powerful mountain nymphs) and only then are already organized the Delphic oracle. By the way, it was believed that the divination of their trained Apollo, and many of them have become famous for the mother (by the standards of walnut) predictors. As an example of such possible cause of Tiresias, who is the son of the nymph Hariklo. True it is typical to have a later society.

For what is “responsible” nymph More? They could even affect the fertility of the fields and meadows, we watched lots of bees, stage of growth, trees and so on. In all, it was not possible to understand – was his spirit. No sooner had the ancient Greeks to go beyond the city limits, as he immediately began to hear the voice of the nymphs and the buzzing of bees, and leaves rustling in the trees, and the sound of streams. These spirits were measured cheerful and aggressive life (as a rule). They were easy to offend and make cry. Nymphs often tried to steer clear of unwanted and unpleasant people, and other powerful beings. And no wonder – because the nymphs were mortal creatures, even and durable. So, it was worth the source dry up or dry out wood – the so-dying and beautiful nymph who lived here. In some ways, the nymphs represent the fragility of nature itself, and to them, respectively, should be treated with care and solicitude.

To appease these spirits they built the sanctuary, dedicated caves and grottos, as well as bringing sacrificial gifts in the form of milk, butter, wine, calves and goats. The oldest sanctuary (from man-made), which is preserved to this day, is in the southern part of the Acropolis of Athens and dated around the seventh century BC. And the caves, hills and rivers named after them clearly before him. To impersonate the charms of nature and its transfer to the magic charm of the art depicted a young beautiful girl who have fine hair, dresses and wreaths of flowers. To show their cheerful disposition, they are often depicted in a posture dance, exposing their arms and legs, and in the completion of the painting – sculptors and mosaics of antiquity dissolve them hair. Poets and singers wishing to win their favor and celebrate the magical beauty, sang them in their creations. Often individual parts could guess who is depicted. So, mollusk kept from his bosom a sink or receptacle. Oread portrayed thoughtful, sitting on a high cliff. Napei living in the valleys and limnady that live in lakes and swamps, too, had its own distinctive features.

And yet I want to write a few words about the love of the ancient Greeks see literally under every stone nymphs. So, except for residents of the seas mentioned earlier, sources, lakes and swamps, in the imagination of the people they were living in the mountains (they were called orestiada), groves (they were called alseidami), trees (it previously considered Dryads and hamadryads), and even for the individual tree species such as mentioned earlier in this article meliad (they are chosen by ash). That such diverse they are. Often wanting to make it a compliment and emphasizing their grace, favor, grace, charm and beauty of the nymphs were called harith (the three goddesses of joy and gladness, a designation which means “grace”).

By the way, a little more about their effects on humans. It was believed that the nymphs can literally transform anyone. They could give inspiration for creativity and activity. Also, they could send to his people and an obsession that can be seen as a weakening of madness in some way. The man in this case, often frenzied dancing, and it seemed that he acquires knowledge nymphs – could see through the earth, to understand the language of plants and birds, creating an unprecedented product. If a person’s ability to receive a significant development, it was thought that he patronized special spirits – muse. Also, many nymphs companions were Olympians – themselves gods of ancient Greece. Most often they are seen as a retinue of Artemis, Pan and Dionysus, but, as previously mentioned, they were carried out and the other gods. Naughty nymphs, for example, liked to Hermes, the god of cheerful and perky travel and trade. Those who have traveled the world with his divine patrons and often engaged in the relevant acts like a yarn, weaving, hunting, divination and fun. Possession of the ancient wisdom and the secrets of life and death have been the lot of many of them. So, in addition to the above-mentioned Daphne can remember more about Mente – beloved of Hades, god of the underworld of the dead. Their interlocutors lower rank – a satirs. Nymphs are very close relatives of Slavic mermaids and various fields of spirits, forests, marshes, lakes and streams.
